Irini Papas

Sourmelina

Her name is mentioned only once in Nikos Kazantzakis novel 'Zorba the Greek'. She was the beautiful widow (played in the film by Irene Papas) in which Kazantzakis had fallen in love. We named our house 'Sourmelina' because the widow which lived in this house the time Kazantzakis was staying in Stoupa, has probably inspired him to the figure. The house which was at that time the administrative building of the lignite mine is just 150 meters away...

Stoupa

The village 'Stoupa' is located in the so-called Mani. An area in the south of the Peloponnese. Stoupa is fortunately located along two beautiful bays with sandy beaches, directly in its background (in a straight line approximately 10 km) it has the up to the 2407m high mountain of Taygetos and is only 100 km from Cape Tainaron, which is one of the southernmost corners of the European continent. In Stoupa and the surrounding villages (Kardamyli, Agios Nikolaos, Neochori) one finds tavernas and bars, tourist shops, supermarkets, butchers, bakery, laundry, pharmacy, etc. also an English speaking doctor. For more specific needs the next town - Kalamata - is easy to reach by public transport. The choice of tavernas is large and many companies offer free WiFi (WLAN) for to access the Internet. Cars, scooters and bicycles can be rented on site. Many interesting excursions, sightseeing, long and short hikes - partly guided - are possible. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate, the temperatures are usually quite comfortable even in winter. Check Zorbas Travel for further information.
